Generator Preventative Maintenance and Repair

Monthly preventative maintenance to include: BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGER SYSTEM Check battery charge functions Cable connections, termination cleanliness and security Check electrolyte level vent caps of all cells in the starting batteries Battery conductance test FUEL SYSTEM Inspect main tank/day tank fuel level Inspect day tank pumps and controls. Test operator day tank controls (where they are available) Inspect all fuel hoses, pipes, clamps, fittings and components Inspect governor linkage Inspect visually the rupture/containment basin Water in Fuel Test–Sub-base, day tanks ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM Inspect all clamps and hoses for leaks, coolant level and condition Inspect condition of radiator cap and filter neck Inspect drive belts and observe alignment & deflection Observe the operation of the coolant heater ENGINE & LUBRICATION SYSTEM Inspect lubrication system, visually check the oil level Inspect crankcase ventilation system Inspect spark ignition system GENERATOR CONTROLS & POWER CONNECTIONS Visually inspect all engine mounted wiring, senders, and devices Lamp test all lights and indicators Visually inspect breaker and power connections Manually operate generator main breaker(s) open and closed (will not exercise breakers or contractors on a paralleling devise) GENERATOR OPERATIONS Start and observe generator and equipment operations Verify engine and generator safeties for proper operation System test with or without load AUTOMATIC TRANFER SWITCH Visually inspect all power and control wiring Visually inspect switch mechanism and enclosure Visually inspect controls and time delays settings Verify function of exercise clock Annual / Initial preventative maintenance, to include in addition to all items above: COOLING SYSTEM Change coolant treatment / anti-freeze Change any filters Clean exterior of radiators Check coolant treatment (DCA) Check anti-freeze solution Check water pumps and circulating pumps Examine duct work Clean / check motor operated louvers FUEL SYSTEM Drain fuel filter main tank Drain fuel day tank filter Change all filters Inspect all components Analyze / replace diesel fuel LUBRICATING SYSTEM Change lubricating oil Change lubricating oil filters Clean crankcase GENERAL Clean generator / engine with compressed air /degreaser Perform test under full load Check spark plugs and replace Check operating alarms ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Battery electrolyte Battery cap vents SWITCHGEAR Operate circuit breaker manually Bus bars, bracing and feeder connections EXHAUST SYSTEM General inspection of exhaust system GENERATOR Measure / record generator winding resistance CONTROL SYSTEM General inspection TRANSFER SWITCH Inspect / replace contacts GENERAL Check System General inspection of emergency stand-by system Load bank test
