Description

This project will be the first phase, and will include the following modifications: COMPOST BEDDED PACK @ KRAUSS DAIRY: A majority of the Krauss Dairy Heifer Freestall Barn will be converted to a compost bedded pack to allow for universal loose housing for milking Holstein and Jerseys. The existing freestalls will be removed, salvaged and reinstalled at the GDAL facility for heifer housing. A single row of freestalls will be maintained along the west wall of the freestall barn, and the existing concrete will need to be extended at these stalls. A 12’ scrape alley will be maintained adjacent to the freestalls, and a new 12’ concrete feed alley will be provided and shared with the bedded pack. An addition (approximately 56’ x 80’) will be constructed on the south end of the barn to provide opportunities for additional housing or a cow handling/working area. A limited number of new headlocks and gating will be needed. Automatic waterers will need to be reconfigured to accommodate the modified layout. Modifications to the existing manure handling system will be required to allow manure to be flushed directly into the existing lagoon. Installation of additional fans is required to support the maintenance of the compost bedded pack and for proper ventilation. The existing electrical panel will be replaced as part of the work. EXPERIMENTAL FEEDING SYSTEM @ KRAUSS DAIRY: A feeding system, similar to American Calan’s Broadbent Feeding System (or equivalent, as approved by CFAES), for 80 cows will be provided, to increase experimental units. Increasing milk cow numbers and experimental units, this will allow for an increased pool of animals available for research projects, with the potential to complete projects in a quicker time frame. These units will be used in the Compost Bedded Pack barn detailed above. This scope of work will also include the miscellaneous steel and electrical infrastructure necessary to support the feeding system. HEIFER FARM RENOVATIONS- GDAL DAIRY: The GDAL Dairy will be converted to a heifer raising facility. Heifers from the Wooster dairy program in addition to the Waterman Dairy program will be raised from weaning until pre-calving in one facility. The adjustable stalls salvaged from Krauss Dairy will be reinstalled here, and a new weighing area will be provided to allow for tracking heifer growth. An estimated 30+ acres of existing pasture will be available for rotational grazing by heifers. The GDAL dairy should be able to house 250+ heifers with simple renovations. Additionally, with heifers being comingled into a large number, some research may become possible.
