Description | This project is comprised of parking and development of trail systems at various conservation-oriented sites and construction of an off-channel boat launch facility on the tidal James River. Temporary parking and natural surface trails are phase I developments planned for several undeveloped sites that may include Anna B. Atkins Park, Winterpock/Route 360 West Park, and Swift Creek Conservation Area. More extensive development is planned for the newly acquired James River Conservation Area, to include an entrance roadway, parking, picnic areas, trails, and overlooks. Future development at this site will include two boat ramps and a parking area. The 810-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Area and the 109-acre James River Conservation Area showcase unique environmental areas in the County. Project partners include the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the Henricus Foundation, the Virginia Department of Conservation, and the National Park Service. Both conservation areas are included in the Regional Birding Trail initiative, the Chesapeake Bay Gateways program, and the Captain John Smith Blueways Trail. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has identified freshwater access to the lower James River as high priority. This project is currently in the FY 2023-2026 CIP. As of January 13, 2023, the bond vote passed. A design team has not been identified and a construction timeline has not been established. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available. |
