17th Century Chapel Tabernacle

This project is one component of a decades long project to reconstruct and interpret the first major Catholic Church in English America. Built at St. Mary's City in the mid-1660s, this classically inspired church stood until c. 1715, when it was demolished, and the building materials transported elsewhere. The reason for its demise is that Maryland's policy of Liberty of Conscience and the Free Exercise of Religion long championed by Lord Baltimore was ended following the Protestant Rebellion of 1689. Following intensive archaeological and architectural research, the architecture of the chapel was deciphered, designed and the building reconstructed between 2003 and 2009. The interior of the church has not yet been recreated, however. A key element of that is the tabernacle that rested on the altar and was considered the core of the sacred space. A full and precise recreation of that tabernacle as it likely appeared in the 17th century is the goal of this RFP.
