Description | The Geology Building is a two-story, 28,500 sq. ft., building designed by Stone & Pitts Architects and Engineers from Beaumont, Texas and was built in 1956 at the same time as, and with a very similar design to, the adjacent Social Behavioral Sciences Building. The building’s structure is comprised of multi-wythe masonry walls over concrete slab on grade, supported by steel columns and beams. Exterior envelope components are comprised of brick masonry veneer over membrane waterproofing, glazed aluminum curtain wall, glazed aluminum ribbon windows, small areas of plaster soffit, and a PVC roof. The roof was replaced sometime in 2007 and is still serviceable with a maintained 20-year warranty. The building has undergone curtain wall replacement at the lecture hall in 1999, an exterior painting, major interior renovation, ribbon window replacement and mechanical system replacement in 2004/5. Due to excessive cracking in the face brick, corrosion of the pencil rod brick ties and lintels, and water infiltration into the building around windows, this project shall completely replace those elements, but retain existing cast stone lintels for reinstallation. The intent of the project is to replace the existing brick facade with new brick that shall match the original to the greatest extent possible. Windows that shall be installed are intended to be modern aluminum extrusions with insulating glazing to meet current wind resistance and energy code requirements. Additional steel shall be added for lateral and gravity support for the brick and the brick ledge shall be extended to create a brick cavity in which we can apply new damp proofing, flashing and insulation. The roof parapet caps shall be replaced to accommodate the enlarged brick cavity and ensure that the roofing system extends up and over the top of the parapet walls. Existing cast stone sculptures and building signage shall be salvaged for re-use. Contractor shall investigate whether the cast stone louvers that were on the original building can be replicated along with installation of new curtain wall at the large classroom on the east side of the building. Interior work will be limited to sheet rock work around the windows and any new window stools that may be required. Plumbing, electrical and low-voltage work shall be limited to the extension of existing roof drains, hose bibbs, electrical boxes and communications devices to align with the new exterior face brick building envelope. |
