Work under this Contract is located in the Book Cliffs near Pine Springs canyon, in Uintah County, Utah. Cut and Pile services for approximately 200 acres. Treatment Methods and Specifications: Two (2) treatment polygons, having a combined total acreage of 200 acres, are to receive a cut and pile treatment to remove the specified conifer vegetation and prepare the slash for later burning. Cutting and piling of slash within each polygon will comply with the following specifications: Cutting: The area within each of the project polygons will be treated by hand cutting crews utilizing chainsaws, brush saws, or similar hand tools. Cutting in each polygon will comply with the following specifications: All live pinyon pine less than 20 inch diameter and all live juniper trees less than 20 inch diameter within 50 feet of Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir trees will be cut. Remaining pinyon and juniper trees less than 16 inch diameter (i.e. those further than 50 feet from Ponderosa pine or Douglas fir trees) in designated cutting area will be thinned to 100 trees per acer (20 foot spacing). Douglas fir trees less than 5 inch DBH (diameter at breast height) will be thinned to12 foot spacing. Cut material will be lopped and limbed so that tree boles and branch material greater than 4 inches in diameter are in contact with the ground surface and all material 4 inches diameter and less will be piled to be burned. Cut stumps shall not exceed 6” in height. Only trees designated for removal shall be cut. All other trees shall be protected from damage. Directional fall all cut trees away from leave trees. Douglas fir leave trees will be selected on the following criteria: Healthy trees are preferred; tree health based on crown condition, live crown ratio of 50% or more and healthy foliage, evidence of cone production. Larger diameter trees are preferred and should be left. Some variation in spacing will be allowed to select most desirable leave trees. Pinyon pine and Juniper leave trees shall be selected on the following criteria: Pinyon pine trees shall be preferred over juniper b. Healthy trees are preferred; tree health based on crown condition, live crown ratio of 50% or more and healthy foliage, evidence of cone production. c. Larger diameter trees are preferred and should be left. d. Some variation in spacing will be allowed to select most desirable leave trees. Trees shall be completely severed from the stump and live limbs shall be cut from the stump. No live limbs shall be left on the stump of cut trees. Trees identified as bearing trees, or any tree blazed or tagged to mark the line of any Government survey, shall not be cut or destroyed under penalty of the law. Trees with reference tags will be left uncut. Hand Pile/Cover: All woody material created by cutting operations and all dead and down timber 4 inch diameter and smaller within the treatment area will be piled. Piling will done based on the specifications listed: All woody material (tree boles and limbs) from cutting operations 4 inch diameter and smaller will be piled. All down dead and blow down material within the treatment area will be limbed and topped at 4 inch diameter. Limbs and tops from down dead and blow down less than 4 inches diameter will be piled. Piles shall be no larger than 8 feet in diameter by 8 feet in height and minimum pile size shall be 4 feet in diameter by 4 feet in height. All material designated to be piled will be cut and piled in such a way as to facilitate constructing tight and compact piles. All piles must be trimmed so that branches do not protrude from the edge of the pile. Piles shall be constructed to maximize distance from live trees (15 feet out side of the trees drip line at a minimum). Unless otherwise authorized all piles shall be constructed within the treatment units. Piles shall be covered with 6 mil black plastic sheeting large enough to cover a minimum of 80% of the pile to prevent moisture from getting into the piled wood. The Contractor will provide the plastic sheeting. The unit is a high wind area and so enough material shall be placed on top of the plastic to prevent the plastic from blowing away Piles shall not block existing roads or travel ways.
