Description | The objective of the Project is to renovate and make operational the Costa Building to extend the life and usefulness of the building facility located at 133 East Washington Street, Athens, GA. The construction phase will require the installation of but not limited to new plumbing, ADA access ramps, 3-story ~3,000SF building addition on the North side of the Costa building, elevator, two sets of stairs, electrical, mechanical, insulation, windows, and storefronts. Allowances will be held for wall and flooring finishes until the occupant needs are identified. The existing mural on the west facade is an important piece of urban art and is to be protected and maintained throughout the project lifecycle. The building has gone through asbestos abatement, PCB removal, and mold removal during the interior demolition completed in March of 2022. An acceptance letter has been received from a third party inspection agency that the building is clear of asbestos and PCBs. There is lead paint that remains on the ceilings and walls and is intended to be removed through demolition or encapsulated under the scope of this project. The Costa Building was built by and named after the Costa family. The family ran a popular ice cream parlor at this location for almost 40 years. The building was built in 1910 and consists of a three-story concrete frame and brick exterior with a full basement. The building has approximately 50 feet of frontage and is 80 feet deep with a total of 15,918 square feet.
