Description

As of June 20, 2023 a design team has been selected and design is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2023. Construction timeline has not been established yet. Redevelopment of this block will continue the improvements that began with the implementation of the Jefferson Avenue Study, the Marshall Ridley Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan, the development of Brooks Crossing, Jefferson Brookville and the renovation and adaptive reuse of the former Whittaker hospital. It will allow the Pearl Bailey Library, the Doris Miller Community Center and the Huntington Middle School/C. Waldo Scott Center to be rebuilt and consolidated within one 7 block area. The two buildings (Huntington & Doris Miller) currently located in the 7 block area are over 50 years old. Huntington Middle School is closed because of its deteriorated state. Doris Miller Community Center is outdated. The library is overcapacity and needs to be expanded. To adequately serve the existing service area, the Library of Virginia recommends a facility that is 20,000 sq. ft. Since the three buildings are at the end of their useful life around the same time, it is practical to consider how each function and use the opportunity to consolidate functions. Rebuilding on one campus will provide a one-stop-shop for educational and recreational services and meeting space. The 75,000 sq. ft. shared-use building will also reduce the cost of the overall rebuild and spark other redevelopment initiatives within the Southeast Community. The creation of the community campus will provide the community with modern services at its neighborhood school, recreation center, and library. Fiscal Year:2023-2027
