Hyalite Dam and Reservoir Optimization Improvements - W79 - City of Bozeman

Armoring of the control tower (to enable some year-over-year storage capacity) and control upgrades to improve winter operation. Current vulnerability of Bozeman to drought is very high, due to the lack of sources that are robust in drought (large raw water reservoirs with year-over-year storage capacity, large rivers, or groundwater). Hyalite Reservoir is capable of providing year-over-year storage, but is not operated in that manner due to concerns of ice damage to the control tower. This increases the risk of an extremely dry year resulting in the inability to fill the Hyalite reservoir with enough water for the City and irrigation uses. This project could potentially remove the 20% surcharge the City pays for Hyalite releases. The project is included in the city's 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
