Description

Project Description The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois is seeking a Professional Services Consultant team -PSC- for the proposed new Cancer Center Research & Innovation Building -CCRIB- for the Cancer Center at Illinois -CCIL. The project will begin with a Conceptualization phase to better define the scope, schedule, cost and project delivery method. Following the Conceptualization Phase the project will seek approval and a funding increase from the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. It is also the Universitys intent to utilize the same PSC for the remainder of the project for design, construction documents, bidding, construction administration, and warranty phase professional services for the CCRIB project. In accordance with the campus master plan, the proposed location for the new building is east of the current Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology -Beckman Institute, 405 North Mathews Avenue, in Urbana, Illinois. As an important part of the University of Illinois strategic plan, The Next 150, the Cancer Center at Illinois was founded to apply the unique campus strengths in science and engineering to groundbreaking cancer research and technological advances. The CCRIB will aim to catalyze large, multidisciplinary projects and innovative new educational programs. It seeks to drive translation of its discoveries and achieve economic impact, in alliance with a wide range of clinical partners. The new building will be unique, however, and unlike other cancer centers across the country because clinical space will be minimal, making way for more research intense initiatives. The focus at the CCRIB will be on technologically advanced cancer investigation and collaboration, in addition to the more traditional biology-based research activities. Industry experts and professional colleagues from area medical centers may be invited to train on the state-of-the art equipment that will be housed in the CCIL building. While CCIL is currently well-situated in the Beckman Institute, it is essential to begin to prepare for long-term growth in its grant-funded research portfolio and programs. The new facility will provide space and facilities to support research, education, and office infrastructure for multi-disciplinary high impact initiatives. The fully constructed building will occupy approximately 130,000 gross sq. ft., yet be connected to and highly synergistic with, the Beckman Institute. A connected basement between the two will provide for comprehensive and seamless analysis from single cells to large animals. The proposed location is within the region of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) building on campus, providing a carbon-to-computer pipeline that will serve the entire campus in growing the biomedical research enterprise for CCIL. The building will not duplicate, but will strongly complement, efforts at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biolgy -IGB- in basic biological science and CCIL clinical translation facilities at Carle Foundation Hospital. Construction Budget: $73,330,000
