Description | Site work for a playground / park / athletic field in Annapolis, Maryland. Conceptual plans call for site work for a playground / park / athletic field. The acquisition of this 5.17 acre undeveloped property will allow for the preservation of an historic beachfront area in the City of Annapolis. The land was the site of many family gatherings, concerts by world-renowned artists, and other cultural events for the African American community in Annapolis. Carr's Beach and its neighboring Sparrow's Beach were two of the major Chesapeake Bay resorts that catered exclusively to African Americans between the 1930s and the 1960s. This was a time when most other resort and beach access was prohibited from this population. It has rich history for African Americans. Program Open Space funds will be used for the acquisition of the property for conservation purposes. The property will be accessible by land and water, and will become a City park. The history of the property ensures that it will attract a diverse audience of visitors. This new audience, attracted by the many stories of Carr's Beach events, will also be exposed to interesting facts about African Americans and their relationship to the Chesapeake Bay. The project is included in the City of Annapolis's FY 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of June 22, 2022, further details regarding design and construction have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available. |
