Description

The Texas Department of Transportation is proposing to expand Loop 1604 from a four-lane expressway to ten-lane expressway. The plans include adding two general purpose lanes and one high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction. The project would ultimately stretch from State Highway 16 to I-35. The layout of auxiliary lanes, and entrance and exit ramps would be reconfigured. The interchange at I-10 would be modernized by removing the cloverleaf connectors, adding direct connectors, and replacing the signalized frontage road intersections with a continuous flow configuration. The project would also include accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians, water quality protection, and other highway features. All improvements would be located within the existing right of way and easements. The project would not include any toll components. As of October 4, 2021, this project is in design. Construction is anticipated to begin in the second quarter of 2022. Information regarding a bid schedule or a general contactor is not available. A design team has been identified. As for the timetable of the improvements, work on Phase I (Bandera Road to I-10) is expected to be finished in 2024, Phase 2 (I-10 to U.S. 281) in 2025, and the interchange overhaul isn't expected to be completed until 2027.
