Pedestrian Bridge Replacement Over Evans Mill Pond

The bridge is located at Challenge Grove Park and is adjacent to a dam, which is located just upstream. The existing structure is a simple span bridge composed of steel stringers and a timber deck which is supported by two reinforced concrete abutments. The routine bridge inspection performed in 2020 found severe deterioration to the steel stringers with areas of 100% section loss. Areas of the bridge were determined to no longer be safe for vehicular or pedestrian loads. The proposed bridge replacement is aimed at restoring full use of the pedestrian path for both pedestrians and small county vehicles. Construction for this project will start with demolition of the existing superstructure, including the timber decking, steel stringers and diaphragms, bridge railings and portions of the abutment and wingwalls necessary to construct the new superstructure. The new superstructure will consist of prestressed concrete plank beams with a concrete deck. The concrete deck will be both colored and stamped. A new steel railing will also be fabricated and installed on the bridge. Stone facing will also be added to the existing parapet/wingwalls. The bridge is designed for mainly pedestrian usage, but is also designed to handle small vehicular loads for county maintenance crews. The bridge is designed for AASHTO H10 Loading (10 tons), and will utilize locked, removable bollards at each end of the bridge to restrict public traffic. Alternate, optional work is included in this scope which will be approved based on the total cost of the project and of the alternate work. Alternate A will consist of removing existing pavement and repaving the roadway and parking lot on the east end of the structure as well as installing new concrete bumpers and striping for parking. Alternate B includes replacement of existing railing around the adjacent dam.
