Description | Double Bituminous surface treatment (chip seal) is a term used to describe a common type of pavement surfacing construction that involves two applications of asphalt binder material and mineral aggregate. The asphalt binder material (emulsion) is applied with a pressure distributor, followed immediately by an application of mineral aggregate, and finished by rolling. The process is repeated with aggregate that is not as coarse (as the first application) for a second application. Chip seal surface treatments are applied to base materials, existing pavement, and new pavement to provide a water-resistant wearing cover over the underlying structure. Chip seal does not add structural strength to the existing pavement; for this reason, it is imperative that the base material under the chip seal be constructed and compacted properly. |
