Various Structure Related Services

Assignments may include some or all of the following services: designing, checking and/or reviewing bridge and highway structure designs; provide design review assistance for hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) designs and related activities; provide in-house design review assistance for bridges and other structures at Central Office or at District offices; administer and conduct value engineering and/or right-sizing evaluations and reviews; provide staffing to respond to bridge emergencies; checking and recommending approval of construction methods, shop drawings, erection drawings and other working drawings; verifying that erection loads, stresses and deflection, etc., are within acceptable limits; reviewing and making recommendations regarding major, unusual and/or complex fabrication designs, erection plans or construction and materials testing operations; developing and conducting familiarization sessions for Department, consultant and/or contractor personnel on critical construction aspects of major, unusual or complex bridges; investigations, including forensic studies and instrumentation of complex problems related to fatigue, welding, design methodologies, constructability or actual failures; designing complex structural elements in critical situations; developing flow charts for coding and conducting studies for approving engineering software; development, implementation and use of 3D bridge modeling; resolution of other complex bridge design and construction problems that may arise; evaluation of bridge design and rating software owned by the Department; updating or revising PennDOT design, construction and inspection manuals and documentation; development or preparing revisions to bridge design and/or construction standards; review of new products; and providing training on complex technical issues. Assignments may require providing staff to perform tasks at Central Office or District offices.
