Description

The project will excavate approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of beach material from the north end of Wallops Island, Virginia and placed on the southern portion of the beach in front of the mission critical infrastructure that are eroded. This "backpassing" will involve removing sand using a pan excavator and trucking it to the shoreline infrastructure protection area where it will be spread using heavy equipment. A series of six (6) 130-foot by 12-foot wide breakwaters spaced 100-feet apart at an average distance of 200 feet channelward of Mean High. Water from the nourished beach will be placed parallel. American beach grass (Ammophila breviligulata, cultivar “Cape”) will be planted at 18- inch intervals over the re-established dune. The planting area will be approximately 150 feet wide along the entire length of the newly created dune in the beach nourishment area.
