Description | Tumacácori National Historical Park proposes to rehabilitate the Courtyard Garden Area of the Visitor Center. The project entails replacing the fired adobes in the walkway to make the majority of the walkway Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) compliant. A portion of the walkway will be widened from 36 inches to ~60 inches to provide better accessibility to the handicap restroom. As many fired adobes as possible will be salvaged and reused. The project will affect ~2382 square feet of fired adobe walkways and base material. The project also entails repairing the water fountain and a cracked adobe bench. The project also entails adding a trench drain, storm water drain, and pipe along the north boundary of the Courtyard Garden area. A total of 65 feet of trenching, approximately 24 in wide and at a depth of up to ~20 in will be completed. An archeological monitor will be on site during all trenching. The Courtyard Garden area has been heavily disturbed during construction of the Visitor Center/Museum, planting and replanting the garden, installing drip systems and drainage, and other activities. It is unlikely the trench drain will uncover intact archaeological deposits. If intact features or deposits are located during trenching, the park will stop work and consult with the SHPO. The project’s Area of Potential Effect (APE) is approximately 0.08 acres in size and encompasses the entire Courtyard Garden area of the Tumacácori Visitor Center/Museum. The Visitor Center/Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. The Courtyard Garden (called the museum garden) is included in the Visitor Center/Museum nomination. The fountain, meandering pathways of brick pavers (walkways), and adobe benches are all specifically mentioned in the Statement of Significance on the nomination form and are thus character defining features. The project has been designed to replace and repair elements in kind as much as possible | ||||
