Description | https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2023/02/15/bharat-forge-north-carolina-sanford-expansion.html A large employer in Sanford is getting ready for an expansion. Bharat Forge is planning a new facility in Sanford that would measure 149,760 square feet, according to the agenda for an upcoming meeting of the town's Technical Review Committee. The new facility would be located at 777 Kalyani Way just off Colon Road. Bharat Forge is an automotive supplier making lightweight aluminum components for companies such as Ford (NYSE: F), Toyota (NYSE: TM) and Mercedes-Benz (OTC: MBGYY). Courtney Holcomb, manager of human resources for Bharat Forge, said this expansion will add up to 100 jobs for the company in Sanford. The company currently employs 250 people at the facility. "The expansion provides additional capacity for us to provide our customers the automotive parts needed as lightweighting technology continues to grow for automotive electrification and sustainability," Holcomb said. Bharat Forge – which is part of the Kalyani Group of companies – made headlines in 2019 when it chose Sanford for the location of its aluminum forging plant. At the time, the company said the new facility in Sanford was part of a vision for a larger manufacturing center that could one day employ 460 people. The announcement was seen as a major boon for Lee County. "It really gave us a lot of momentum that we were able to build on," said Jimmy Randolph, CEO of the Sanford Area Growth Alliance. "It was absolutely a catalyst for the success of our marketing efforts from that point forward." Randolph pointed to other big economic development announcements that followed like Astellas and Abzena, the latter of which was just acquired by Pfizer (NYSE: PFZ). And more industrial development could soon be coming to Sanford. Lee County has become a hotspot for out-of-county investors looking for opportunities for growth within the Greater Triangle. The county's proximity to Chatham County – the future home of VinFast and Wolfspeed (NYSE: WOLF) – makes Lee County ripe for investments in the industrial space, as suppliers will look for land close to those two manufacturers. Other notable projects in Lee County proposed recently include a potential 140.8-acre rezoning to allow for more commercial and industrial development along N.C. Highway 87 in Sanford; a new $10.2 million speculative industrial building; and a 600-acre industrial park near a CSX line. _________________________________________________________ The project scope includes the new construction of a automobile component facility on 70 acres. Scope details have not been released. As of September 23, 2019 the project is in early planning stage. Lee County will purchase the property. Information regarding the architect, general contractor and method of selection has not been disclosed. The construction timeline has not been determined, but is not expected to begin before the fourth quarter of 2020. |
