Description | The work includes but is not limited to the following: The Upgrades of the Environmental Control System (ECS) at LC 39B. The upgraded ECS will provide conditioned clean purge air to various compartments of the new Space Launch System (SLS) vehicle. The scope includes replacement of the existing cooling tower, relocation of existing ductwork, heaters, chambers, and instrumentation, addition of new heaters, chambers and high pressure ducts, replacement of filter housings and valves, revising existing gaseous nitrogen piping including replacement of heritage aluminum gaseous nitrogen piping with stainless steel, modification of existing controls systems hardware utilizing existing Allan Bradley PLC-based controls system architecture, installation of new humidifiers, and incidental related work. All equipment will be installed at and in the vicinity of KSC Building J7-337 (Launch Pad 39B). Existing piping and ducts will be replaced and/or relocated, requiring careful removal and demolition. Electrical equipment supporting the ECS will be modified to accommodate the new equipment. New ducts will be installed to interface with the Mobile Launcher. Replacement of the existing cooling tower, demolition of the existing cooling tower, construction of a support frame, procurement of a packaged cooling tower including fill, fans, gear boxes, pumps, valves, piping, access platform, and handrails. Control System work will require fabrication of system cables that include signal-level I/O and AC and DC distribution and control, and will utilize heavy-duty cables and MIL-SPEC connectors required to meet various KSC and MIL standards. This facility will be undergoing other construction modifications during the performance of this construction project and close coordination with the Government’s team will be required. Specifically, this project consists of, but is not limited to: A. Upgrade of the LC 39B Environmental Control System. 1. Replacement of existing cooling tower including replacement of all components. 2. Fabrication and installation of high pressure (~ 10 psig) air-tight flanged single wall and dual wall ductwork with insulation. 3. 60Hz power modifications to switchgear and motor control centers. 4. Fabrication of custom heavy duty connector type control cabling and installation between instrumentation / control devices and remote IO and/or power distribution cabinets. 5. Fabrication and installation of ~150 psig stainless steel gaseous nitrogen piping. 6. Fabrication and installation of structural steel service platforms. B. Contractor will be required to closely coordinate all sub-contractor’s trades and create and maintain a 3-D coordination model to aid in production of shop drawings, placement of equipment and execution of work with the existing and new work. C. Contractor will be required to provide testing results of each system (cooling tower performance, ductwork leak and proof tests, maximum system performance requirement test, and operations validation) and provide full support to operate the system for the Government’s witnessed Commissioning including testing. |
