Description | Description of Work: Pier 2 is a general purpose berthing pier, serving home-ported and visiting vessels for the Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The pier measures about 1550 ft. long by 200 ft. wide, with concrete deck approximately 12 ft. above mean low water (MLW). Constructed in 1958, the pier was surrounded with a wood fender system designed to protect the pier and provide berthing for vessels. The original fender system consisted of 652 timber piles, connected to the pier deck by blocks, wales and chocks, and braced by a lower horizontal wale located one to three feet above MLW. Through the past sixty years the fender system has deteriorated, and has created a hazard for incoming vessels. The current project is intended to “clean up” the fender system by securing loose, but still functional, timbers and hardware, removing broken piles, installing new wale, and reattaching loose piles. |
