Description

The new facility will offer meals and services to senior citizens, as well as public recreation space for residents of all ages. The two-story building will be approximately 70,000 square feet. According to the official site evaluation, each side of the building will have an abundance of sunlight exposure. The center will be located directly across the street from Berlin High School, which will allow for intergenerational programming, with access to Farmington Avenue to the rear. The center will include a computer room, library, craft room and a large, commercial-grade kitchen for the senior daily lunch program and special events. The entrance lobby will be adjacent to a new aquatic center, which will feature an eight-late competition pool and a therapy pool. The facility plans also features a 12,500-square-foot gymnasium, which includes fitness space and full-size and smaller basketball courts. Male, female, and family locker rooms are also part of the design. The design also calls for a little more than 150 parking spaces. It is possible that “overflow” parking will be added for larger events. At the back of the site, there will be at least a 5,000-square-foot yard, which can be used for outdoor recreation. The design also includes tree buffers between the center and neighborhoods to the west and the east.
