Description | Project Description: This project is the comprehensive renovation of the historic 50,929 GSF HolmesHunter Academic Building. The Holmes-Hunter Academic Building forms the front door of the University of Georgia's historic North Campus. Immediately adjacent to iconic Arch, the structure is the largest historic building on North Campus and houses important student and administrative functions such as the Registrar's Office, Student Financial Aid and Institutional Diversity. The building also houses academic units such as the Center for International Trade and Security and the African Studies Institute. In addition to its prominent location on North Campus, almost every student will interact with the building at some point during their time at UGA. In 2001, the building was named in honor of Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter, the first African American students to enroll in classes at UGA in 1961. The naming recognizes and pays tribute to Mr. Holmes and Ms. Hunter-Gault's bravery, legacy and impact at the University of Georgia. The Holmes-Hunter Academic Building is composed of two structures (1831 & 1860) that have been joined to form the current building and renovated and added on to multiple times over the years (1903, 1960's, 1970's). Over time, the courtyard was gradually infilled to bridge the two buildings. The project will restore the original courtyard, integrate all new MEP systems, install an elevator and additional stairwells to bring the building into code and ADA compliance, and to completely renovate the interior. Construction Start: January 3, 2023 (Abatement & Demo) May 25, 2023 (Balance of Work) Substantial Completion: April 19, 2024 Final Completion: June 3, 2024 |
