Description | Site work for the new Department of Public Works facility on Sachem Street in right on schedule. "Right now, we're in between the design development and construction phases. Everything's progressing," stated Chris Peck, DPW Director, on the status of the new building. The site that will be home to the new DPW Since the town approved the funding and construction at last October's Town Warrant, engineering consultants Weston & Sampson, who also conducted the feasibility study for the project. At the latest DPW Building Committee meeting, held on July 17, representatives from engineering consultants Weston & Sampson, as well as project manager for the site clearing, Daedalus, offered updates on what's been done so far with the land. The intention is to have the preliminary design phase complete for an early/mid-September bidding period. This bidding period will last about six weeks. Peck said the town hopes to attract between 5-10 big capital project contractors for the new DPW. The town hopes to announce a winning bid by mid-October, with construction beginning in late November or early December. According to Peck, preliminary site work, such as establishing the foundation, putting up walls, and ordering steel for the structure, should be workable tasks during reasonable winter conditions. The projected 32,000 square foot new DPW was given a cost estimate of $15.1 million by Weston & Sampson in its feasibility study, though officials are hoping for lower bids. Funds are not being appropriated through a debt exclusion, like the new high school and new police station, but are coming from the town's general funds and enterprise accounts, meaning no tax increases for residents. The 14-18 month construction timetable would put the finished site ready for occupancy by spring 2021. As of August 8, 2019, information regarding an architect is not available. Site clearing has already begun. The intention is to have the preliminary design phase complete for an early/mid-September 2019 bidding period.
