Description

A settled concrete lined vertical shaft poses a danger to hunters and hikers in the area and captures water during rain events. The shaft measures 8 feet x 10 feet and varies between 4 feet and 8 feet deep. Three water holding structures, likely wells or cisterns, are located less than 500 feet from the shaft. An additional hazard, a mine waste pile that has burned in the past is collapsing and slipping creating unsafe slopes and undercut pile tops adjacent to an abandoned mine access road that serves as an access trail into this portion of the Wayne National Forest. The scope of work will include filling the shaft with PUF and then a soil cap. The surface flow will be diverted from the shaft to the nearby creek using a rock lined channel. The coal waste pile containing red dog will be regraded and vegetated to eliminate future instability and fall hazards. The water holding structures will be pumped out and filled with native soil.
