Professional Services for Loop 101 and Loop 202 Freeway Waterline and Sewer Rehabilitation

There was a potable water pipeline break in the northeast quadrant of the Price Road/Loop 202 interchange in February 2018. In the aftermath effort of cleaning up the damage and performing repairs, the existing condition of two large diameter pipelines were discovered to require remediation. There is a 30-inch diameter potable water pipeline crossing the Loop 202 freeway and a 36-inch diameter potable water pipeline crossing the Price Road freeway, constructed between 2002 and 2006 by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). Both pipelines are the material type of concrete cylinder pipe (CCP) and specifically Bar-Wrapped Pipe (BWP) or AWWA C303 Bar-Wrapped Steel Cylinder Concrete Pressure Pipe. There are several aspects of the installation that were found to be in non-conformance with the AWWA and MAG standards, such as incomplete grouting of internal joints and suspected incomplete grouting of external joints. Additionally, the pipelines are installed in buried steel casing sleeves without fill in the annular space and the pipelines are set on improper wood material skids. There is an existing City of Chandler 48-inch sanitary sewer that is at the same elevation as one of the steel casings, putting it at risk of failure should the existing water pipeline fail.
