Meade Senior High School Revitalization Project

The existing high school is currently comprised of two buildings separated by a 2-hr fire wall. The addition to the west, completed in 2014 (Building 2), is code compliant and is proposed to remain so. The existing 1974 building (Building 1) fails to meet current life safety and building code standards of Allowable Area and Travel Distance. The quality of the 1974 building is that of IIB construction, Educational Occupancy, Multi-Story, and Sprinkled, which allows a maximum of 52,881 SF (per floor plate) including current frontage increases. The existing building area is 323,249 SF on two floors with its largest floorplate being 181,598 SF. In addition, the existing 1974 building length and width are such that occupants in certain central areas of the building cannot egress within the allowable travel distances. IBC requires 250’ and NFPA requires a maximum 200' travel distance, however current travel distances exceed 300' in places. Proposed Project: Renovate and expand to accommodate academic program needs Buildings 2, 3 & 4 are new additions and will be separated from the existing 1974 building (Building 1 on the plan diagram) with 2-hr fire walls featuring independent collapse. These new building additions will be fully complaint with IBC 2018. Building 1 (1974): We are proposing to renovate areas within the building and demolish and replace a portion of the 1974 building, refacing it to form a new secure and easily identifiable main entrance. As a result, Building 1 will be reduced to 277,890 SF on two stories from its current 323,249 SF.
