Description | Proposal: Ulysses S. Grant High School (commonly known as Grant High School) occupies a large site where existing athletic facilities are partially located in the city-owned Grant Park, a separate and adjacent property located to the west and north of the school-owned property. Grant High School recently underwent a modernization and remodeling project which was finished in 2019. At the present time, the applicant is working with the school district and Portland Parks and Recreation to complete improvements to an area known as the Upper Field that straddles the property line between the school and city park parcels. This Upper Field area currently contains a newer combined soccer, lacrosse and baseball field that was updated as part of the Grant High School modernization project, located west of the school building and east of the sunken track and field area at the southwest corner of the park. The current proposal is to improve the existing multi-use Upper Field with an expansion to the south and east to accommodate a new softball field diamond and outfield, bleacher seating and dugouts, field lighting, and a voice amplification or Public Address (PA) system. The field expansion includes an expansion of the artificial turf area approximately 20-0 south of the existing field area, with 30-0-tall backstop fencing and two new covered dugouts for the softball field. Minor changes to existing pedestrian pathways are proposed around the edges of the new softball field area, and new bleacher seating of approximately 195 lineal feet is proposed at the softball field (similar to those at the existing baseball field). Seven new LED light fixtures atop new lighting poles are proposed on the edges of the expanded multi-use baseball/soccer/lacrosse/softball Upper Field area, with four light poles at 70-0 tall, and three light poles at 80-0 tall. As of May 7, 2021 this project is in design. Bidding for contractors and a firm construction timeline has not been announced. * *Project information, including timeline and contacts, has been obtained through public sources.
