Description

Blue River Road provides a connection from Red Bridge Road to Hickman Mills Drive. The street is currently closed from Bannister Road to Red Bridge Road due to a catastrophic failure caused by high rainfalls in 2010.The street was closed when the high river level caused the base and slope to fail, and the southbound lanes are now one to four feet below the northbound lanes. For more than 20 years, many smaller projects were completed to hold the road together, but large storms were too much for the slope below the roadway to handle. This cooperative project with the US Corp of Engineers and the Water Services Department is to reopen Blue River Road between 87th Street to Cleveland Road. The US Corps of Engineers is currently evaluating slope improvements in this section. The City will be required to provide the local match anticipated at 65 percent federal and 35 percent local funds, as well as all roadway and upper slope improvements. The Water Service Department will work to identify local funding options to match potential federal funds through the US Corps of Engineers. Public Works will work on roadway plans to be incorporated into the project. These funds will supplement the already allocated PIAC funds and complete anticipated funding for the slope repair and roadway improvements. As of July 28, 2021, this project is included in the City of Kansas City's FY 2022-2026 CIP and funding is allotted for 2021-2022 and 2023-2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
