I-275 Bus on Shoulder

Implement the I-275 Bus on Shoulder Pilot Project. Recent years commuter behavior and decision making reveal increases in transit ridership as well as intercity travel between St. Petersburg and Tampa that has resulted in greater demand for competitive travel options from the general public. Goals for the Project include development of the I-275 corridor allowing transit vehicles to safely transition from travel lanes to outside shoulders when traffic congestion forces vehicles to lower their speed less than 35 miles per hour. Where auxiliary lanes exist, transit vehicles can remain in the auxiliary lanes to travel between interchanges. Otherwise, the transit vehicles will need the ability to transition to the outside shoulders to improve transit travel times and connectivity. Project improvements include the following: • Paved shoulder widening (flexible pavement), earthwork with side slope re-grading and stabilizing • Shoulder milling and resurfacing of flexible pavement Constructing, replacing, relocating or adjusting existing drainage structures impacted by the Project • Constructing, replacing, relocating or adjusting new and existing signing, pavement markings, and lighting features impacted by the Project • Constructing guardrail adjacent to shoulder widening or other improvements • Constructing a Ramp Signaling system at the northbound and southbound on-ramps from 38th Avenue N. 54th Avenue N. • Constructing Portable Traffic Monitoring Sites (PTMS) impacted by the project.
