Description | Site work for a civil project in Salem, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for site work for a bridge / tunnel; and water / sewer project. The Shenandoah Tunnel Diversion is the second phase of a project to divert stormwater flows around a portion of downtown and reduce flooding on streets in the downtown area. For this phase of the project, a diversion tunnel is proposed that will tie into the existing Trout Run Tunnel (54x156 reinforced concrete box culvert) near the intersection of Shenandoah Avenue NW and Central Avenue NW, to divert runoff along Shenandoah Avenue to the N. Jefferson Street intersection with a 6H x 12W reinforced concrete box culvert. The diversion tunnel will then tie into the existing 8H x 10W tunnel that was previously used by the Hotel Roanoke to provide pedestrian access downtown, below the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. Improved maintenance access will be established into the existing pedestrian tunnel near the corner of Shenandoah Avenue and N. Jefferson Street. The existing pedestrian tunnel will then be connected to the existing 6H x 12W corrugated aluminum arch tunnel on Norfolk Avenue by extending the existing tunnel south to build a connection over the arch pipe in a junction box on the existing Norfolk Tunnel. Laterals along Shenandoah Avenue will be connected to the new tunnel with improved drainage inlets. This project is in included in the City of Roanoke FY 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). As of July 08, 2022, further details regarding design and construction have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
