Description | The original Saline River Dam was built in 1845 for milling flour. Later Henry Ford presumably demolished the original dam then rebuilt a new spillway for electric power production. At that time, Mr. Ford likely also built the mill race inlet and channels (now Weller's Inn) to the far right of the right embankment. The left embankment failed in 1967. The dam and embankment were restored in 1973 per plans by Ayres, Lewis, Norris & May, and was modified at that time to include gate races on either side of the main spillway. The existing dam appears to include the gate races built in 1973, and the concrete spillway and portions of the spillway piers built by Henry Ford. |
