Description

The intent of this project is to stabilize a landslide that is affecting the public road right of way, adjacent utilities, and private property at 33080 Bailey Run Road. The landslide is believed to be caused in part by drainage from an adjacent abandoned coal mine. This Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is draining onto the hillside and driveway of the private residence. The hillside remains saturated and has become destabilized resulting in a roughly one half acre landslide that threatens to take out a 150 ft section of Bailey Run road. To stabilize the landslide a Rock Toe Buttress (RTB), along with drainage controls, will be installed. The damaged portion of Bailey Run Road and the affected waterline will be rebuilt. The mine drainage is originating from the Vulcan Coal Mine (MS-032) which was operated by Vulcan Coal Company and excavated the Pomeroy# 8A coal seam until it was abandoned in 1923. The landslide poses a threat to local traffic and needs to be stabilized to prevent further damage to the road, adjacent utilities, and private property.
