Description | The 2021 delivery of the 43,000 gross square feet (GSF) Integrated Science Complex provided a variety of new natural science research labs, instructional labs and related core service spaces that allowed the partial relocation of functions and uses from the four story, 79,000 GSF Herty Hall, originally constructed in 1954 with subsequent additions and minor renovations in 1971 and 2009. Since most of Herty's lab spaces have had no significant renovation, they lack the flexible configuration required to support modern teaching pedagogy and have casework and utility services requiring renewal and upgrade. The building also has no modern faculty and student collaboration spaces and lacks adequate circulation and building support space. This project will include the renovation and/or reconfiguration of approximately 39,000 GSF (approximately 50%) of existing space on portions of all four floors. The scope is anticipated to include a combination of general space reconfiguration and specialized lab configurations, including complete renovation of the Organic Chemistry lab and chemical stock room. The project will also provide a commons and circulation space appropriate to the size and density of the building, relocate the existing poorly configured accessible main floor entrance, create new code-compliant rest rooms, and renew other selected building systems. The project is intended to create quality space to support undergraduate natural science instruction, as well as provide needed space to enhance instruction in nursing and health sciences programs.
