Description

Lead is a naturally occurring heavy metal, but most human exposures to high lead levels in the environment are due to human activities. Lead has been widely used in a variety of products and materials such as pipes, paints, ceramics, and gasoline. When ingested or inhaled, lead can have adverse effects on nearly all organ systems in the body. Children under the age of six (6) years are especially at risk because they are still developing, absorb lead easily, and have a tendency to put their hands and objects in their mouths. Lead exposure often occurs with no obvious signs and symptoms. In children, lead poisoning can cause slowed development, reading and other learning problems, behavioral problems, as well as brain, liver, and kidney damage
