The Winter Park-based private college is seeking a final conditional-use permit on April 26 for a new 31,791-square-foot Rollins Art Museum and a new 47,138-square-foot Crummer Graduate School of Business building on 2.37 acres at 200 E. New England Ave. and 203 E. Lyman Ave. The two buildings are part of the "Innovation Triangle," along with the 71-room expansion of the on-campus Alfond Inn that is expected to be finished this year. The request by Rollins would include maintaining the existing 39,747-square-foot Lawrence Center office building. The future Crummer building will be smaller than the 77,189-square-foot building proposed in 2020, but slightly bigger than the 44,500-square-foot building that was proposed more recently. In addition, the future Rollins Museum of Art building will be bigger than the 30,766-square-foot building proposed in 2020, with the building turned to provide a lawn and an event plaza on the northeast corner of the site. Prior plans had the two buildings roughly parallel with each other. Rollins College spokeswoman Jo Marie Hebeler told Orlando Business Journal the contractor and total cost have yet to be determined. The projects are currently in the fundraising phase, but the college declined to reveal how much it raised so far. Previous fundraising goals included $25 million for the Crummer building and $22.6 million for the museum, but it is not clear if and how those have changed. "The cost is not yet finalized as it depends on the final approval," Hebeler said. "We’ll know more in the coming weeks." Rollins College has more than 3,057 students, according to Orlando Business Journal research. The college offers both bachelor's and master's degree programs. Meanwhile, U.S. nonresidential building starts — which include education — have declined for the first two months of the year compared to the same period last year, according to Dodge Construction Network. Nonresidential construction starts in January and February were valued at $50.79 million, down from $58.9 million for the same period in 2022. "The downturn in commercial and institutional building starts could very well be the beginning of an anticipated slow-down as the construction sector pulls back in the face of higher interest rates and lagging economic growth," Dodge Construction Network Chief Economist Richard Branch said. "While this ebbing should be comparatively mild, some construction verticals could face extreme stress as the year progresses.” |
