Description | The project limits for the North Druid Hills Road Bridge replacement over CSX Railroad are from Spring Creek Road to Willivee Drive (DK-457, GDOT PI 000017991). A preliminary concept report was completed under PI 0015061 and is included as an attachment to this RFvQ. The North Druid Hills Road bridge over the CSX Railroad tracks has a bridge is load posted and requires replacing as there is no way to retrofit the existing structure. The project includes the replacement of the deficient bridge to allow for multi-modal traffic including vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles due to the proximity to the South Fork Peachtree Creek Trail near the western limit of the project and transit facilities and pedestrian generators located within the project limits. To facilitate these connectivity goals, the project will begin at the signalized intersection of Spring Creek Drive, across from which the South Fork Peachtree Creek Trail currently terminates, and will end at the signalized intersection of Willivee Drive. These project limits will also provide adequate room for tie-in of the new bridge, including any necessary turn lane, walls and traffic signal improvements. The existing bridge is located on North Druid Hills Road approximately 1350 feet east of Spring Creek Road. North Druid Hills Road is a principal arterial with an average annual daily traffic (AADT) of 37,000 vehicles per day connecting Interstate 85 with US 78, the Stone Mountain Freeway, and is an important arterial for DeKalb County and the region. With a direct connection to the South Fork Peachtree Creek Greenway Trail at Spring Creek Road, providing active modes of transportation is important to the County and the stakeholders. Maintenance of traffic is a key component of this project. It is highly desirable to keep 2 travel lanes in the peak direction open at all times.
