Background The City of Toccoa's Water Treatment Plant (WTP) utilizes two earthen lagoons for storage of alum sludge generated from filter backwashes and raw water sedimentation. The ponds are generally square in shape with the following approximate dimensions: lagoon #1 - 130 ft. x 180 ft.; lagoon #2 - 145 ft. x 190 ft. Current estimated sludge depth in each lagoon is 5.0 - 6.0 ft. The sludge disposal area is located remote from the treatment plant; however, an 8-inch aluminum irrigation pipe runs continuously from the storage lagoons to the disposal site. The pipeline runs cross-country approximately 2,500 L.F. with an estimated elevation change of 105 - 115 vertical feet over an intermediate high point. All sludge shall be hydraulically dredged and pumped to the disposal area with no sludge hauling necessary. Manual depth measurements may be taken by the Owner for verification of sludge removal. Additionally, no work is anticipated at the disposal area prior to receiving the pumped sludge. |
