Hobbs: Ice Center Improvements - 410-003 - City of Eau Claire

This project will address replacement of the combined O’Brien/Akervik refrigeration system, the O’Brien Rink ice floor, the O’Brien Rink dasherboards, the O’Brien Rink bleachers, and the skate traffic flooring throughout the O’Brien & Hughes rinks. Project 410-005 must be completed prior to this project as additional mechanical space is needed to accommodate modern refrigeration equipment. The 2021 refrigeration evaluation identifies these needs and provides budget estimates for each mechanical/refrigeration portion of the project. Additionally, the O’Brien Rink ice floor does not have subfloor heat, leaving it vulnerable to frost heave and potential failure. The O’Brien and Akervik ice floors are piped on a common cooling loop, a failure in one floor will cause the loss of ice on the other floor, causing a facility shutdown. Installation of a new O’Brien Rink ice floor with subfloor heat will prevent failure and eliminate the potential for frost heave. This project is included in the fy 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Program. As of June 23, 2023, further details regarding design and firm construction timelines have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
