Design-Build Services for Ice Making Equipment

The concrete rink floor of this original 1971 facility is composed of a steel piping grid, (industry standard at that time) with a secondary anchored concrete slab underneath the cold slab. The secondary slab does not perform as a warm slab. The EHIR has not been available for skating since April 2019 due to an undetermined leak in the ice floor and associated leaking in the cold floor header. The leaking caused a soft, slushy area on the ice surface that if left untreated could create a risk of injury to skaters and hockey players. The existing refrigerant plant at the EHIR was installed in 2009. The plant utilizes R-404a, as its primary refrigerant and ethylene glycol as its secondary refrigerant. The proposed scope of work involves the full removal and replacement of the cold slab, under-slab piping, insulation and ice making equipment in the mechanical room. The new cooling will be an ammonia based refrigerant system.
