Description | KCAB has been experiencing high levels of dissolved sulfates in several pump stations and tanks. In an anoxic environment, commonly found in pump stations, sulfate reducing bacteria feed on the sulfate that is emitted from the breakdown of organic material. As a result, hydrogen sulfide (āH2Sā) is formed, and this chemical is highly toxic and corrosive. The Environmental Operations Department believes that the increased dissolved sulfides are related to multiple reasons ā the increased construction activity, the increase in the amount hydrocarbon release (both reported and non-reported), and the natural conditions found in a typical sewer pump station. |
