CLARIFICATION DEADLINE 10/6/2022 4:00 PM The Hamlet of Hampton Bays occupies roughly 13 square miles of land and some five square miles of water. At the eastern end of Hampton Bays is Shinnecock Canal, which allows northern and southern passage in Long Island without boats having to move farther east around Montauk. Shinnecock Inlet is a popular destination for commercial and sport fishing, and the local port is the second-busiest commercial fishing port in the state. A barrier island is located between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Shinnecock and Tiana Bays to the north, affording almost four miles of public oceanfront.Hampton Bays, with its sandy ocean beaches, drew visitors from afar to its many small waterfront resorts and once enjoyed a thriving tourism economy. With a downturn in the tourism industry in the 1980's some of these resort motels, including the subject property, fell into decline and disrepair as more fully described in the Waterfront Revitalization Plan
