Description

The Eastway Drive/Shamrock Drive/Frontenac Drive intersection was added to the Advanced Planning Program in FY 2020; advanced planning is complete; design and construction are being funded with 2022 and 2024 bonds. This intersection is part of the high injury network and a redesign of the intersection is important to reduce the number of crashes and protect drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. New "connector streets" will be constructed to remove left turn lanes from the intersection, making it more efficient. The project will also add a multi-use path along Eastway Drive, buffered bike lanes, sidewalks, and a planting strip on Shamrock Drive that will tie into the Shamrock Drive Streetscape project. The total construction estimate is $39 million, with $8 million anticipated from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and an additional $7,800,000 from the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO). This project is included in the city's 2023-2027 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). A civil engineer was awarded a design contract at the December 12, 2022 City Council meeting. Design was place on hold in November 2022 with 25% completed design plans; however, design is anticipated to resume in Spring 2023 and take one year to complete. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
