Description

Construct approximately 5 continuous miles of coastal erosion protection comprised of a revetment, armored berm, and raised and armored road along the coast of Utqiagvik. The structure extends from approximately the end of the Runway in the southwest to Dewline Road in the northeast. The revetment section (approximately 0.75 miles) consists of a layered system of filter rock, core rock, B rock, and 2.7-ton armor stone. This section will generally be constructed to crest heights of 18 feet and 20 feet above MLLW and require approximately 60,000 cubic yards (CY) of armor stone along with approximately 65,000 CY of filter, core, and B rock. The armored berm section (approximately 0.5 miles) consists of a layered system of filter rock, core rock, B rock, and 2.7-ton armor stone. The crest will be approximately 18 ft above MLLW and require approximately 34,000 CY of 2.7-ton armor stone, along with approximately 50,000 CY of filter, core, and B rock. The raised and armored road section (approximately 3.5 miles) will require raising an existing road surface (Stevenson Street, current elevation of 9 to 12 feet above MLLW) and armoring the seaward side. The crest of the armor will be to heights of approximately 16.5 and 18 feet above MLLW with the raised road approximately 3.5 feet below the crest. The armored seaward side will have a layered system of filter, core, B rock, and 2.7-ton armor stone. This section will require approximately 150,000 CY of 2.7-ton armor stone along with approximately 230,000 CY of filter, core, and B rock. Intersecting streets and driveways will be modified to accommodate the new street heights. Significant Tasks: Sourcing and quarrying of rock material, transportation of rock material to Utqiagvik, Alaska, and placement with a well-keyed armor rock layer. Removal of existing temporary shore protection will be required. (Gravel filled supersacks, temporary berms, articulated concrete matting, etc.…) Two water control structures will be constructed to allow controlled release of impounded waters landward of the shore protection. Water control structures will be located to allow discharge from Lower/Tasigarook Lagoon along the armored berm and Middle Salt Lagoon (sewage outfall) along the raised and armored road. Pile supported concrete structures with control gates are expected. Construction of at least three (3) beach access points. Two access points will accommodate a pickup truck with boat trailer. One access point will be utilized as a barge-landing.
