Engineer And Replace Overhead Shield Wire With Optical Ground Wire

FKEC is seeking proposals to engineer and replace the existing 7#8 Alumaweld overhead shield wire with a 96 count fiber aluminum clad steel/aluminum alloy Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) on FKEC’s 138KV transmission line from the Tavernier Substation to the Jewfish Substation, a distance of approximately 14 miles. One other substation (Rock Harbor) is located along this line – approximately 8 miles south of the Jewfish substation near the south end of Key Largo. The transmission line segment is part of a looped system but may need to be treated as a radial feed depending on load and other conditions. There are 189 structures in the project, three of these are substation structures. Some transmission structures have 25KV distribution underbuilt. Most of the underbuilt is single circuit three phase; a small number of structures have double circuit underbuilt. The 189 line structures are all single pole, 146 are concrete and 43 are steel. Heights range from 85 to 114 feet. The average span length is 390 feet. There is one single span creek crossings with no structures located in the water. The line runs generally parallel with highway US 1 (Overseas Highway) and crosses the highway at two locations.
