Description

This sale is a per unit, logger select thinning of approximately 11,375 acres within the Babcock/Webb WMA of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The goals of the timber sale are: thin the tree density for forest health, open timber stands canopy to encourage native ground cover growth, control Invasive hardwood species and enhance endangered Red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. There are two (2) different units being thinned. Unit one is approximately 10,733 acres of natural mature slash pine. This will be a logger select thinning. Residual pine BA will be reduced to approximately 30 to 40 square feet per acre. Timber to be removed from Unit 1 includes slash pines less than 9 inches DBH as indicated in the attached harvest guideline. Loggers will begin cutting in Unit 1A and then continue to Unit 1B. All timber harvesting must be completed in Unit One before moving to Unit Two. An estimated 15,670 tons of timber is to be removed in Unit One. Unit Two is approximately 642 acres of natural mature slash pine and invasive hardwoods. Unit two will be the last area cut, once all of unit one is finished. This will also be a logger select thinning of the slash pine and total removal of invasive hardwoods. Timber to be removed consists of various size classes of mostly slash pine trees and invasive hardwoods. Residual pine basal area (BA) will be reduced to approximately 30 square feet per acre. An estimated 4,453 tons of timber is to be removed. The successful bidder must work through a minimum of 700 acres per year. This requirement is set to encourage steady production and maximize access during the dry season. Loggers may exceed the acreage requirement within the first year. If loggers meet the 700-acreage requirement for both years but have not finished cutting the sale, the timber sale contract may be amended to allow additional time to finish cutting the total sale acres. This will be a twenty four (24) month contract.
