Description

(a) Description: Base Bid work is the reconstruction of Ideal Cove Trail. Major work items include the demolition of approx. 0.8 mile of existing step-and-run boardwalk and other wood trail structures, salvaging suitable lumber for reuse, and installation of trail structures such as aggregate surfacing, boardwalk bridges, Saltwater Trailhead rest area, retaining logs, stone pitching, stone steps, concrete steps, Type-A boardwalk, and Type B (step-and-run) boardwalk. Optional Item #1 includes demolition and removal of the existing approx. 60 LF log stringer Hill Lake Bridge, installation of a new trail bridge of similar length, installation of Bridge Junction Rest Area, demolition of approx. 80 LF of existing boardwalk trail and installation of aggregate surfacing trail in place of boardwalk. Optional Item #2 is the installation of two aggregate surface rest areas with seating stones at midpoints in Ideal Cove Trail. (b) Location and Facilities: The trailhead is located 15 air miles southeast of Petersburg on the east side of Mitkof Island. The trail begins at Frederick Sound north of Ideal Cove and leads west to its junction with the Three Lakes trail system at a bridge downstream from (east of) Hill Lake. The site is accessible from Petersburg via Mitkof Highway, the Three Lakes Road, and the Sand Lake, Hill Lake, or Crane Lake Trails; a distance of approximately 25 road miles and 2 trail miles to the saltwater trailhead. Petersburg is accessible by scheduled airline service, barge, and is on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system. There are no utilities at the project site. In 2015 cell phone service was not available from any point along the trail.
