Description

Canal bank improvements will be constructed along the Grand Canal between 75th Avenue and 47th Avenue to cover high pedestrian and bicycle use in the area. The primary intent of the project is to develop a contiguous commuter and recreational route including safe crossing facilities at arterial and collector street trail intersections. Secondary intent is to reintegrate the canals into the surrounding communities by incorporating public art, landscaping and neighborhood access points to the path to provide better visibility, access and ultimately appreciation of the canal system in the Phoenix area. This project would also link neighborhoods in the corridor to seven schools, six transit routes, six churches, and four recreational areas. Improvements include concrete or asphalt pedestrian and bicycle path, lighting, furniture, shade structures, public art, complementary landscaping, possible pedestrian bridges, street crossing elements such as full traffic signals and HAWK pedestrian beacons, pedestrian refuge islands and/or marked but unsignalized crosswalks that will be constructed within the City of Phoenix right-of-way.
