Description

State of the art swine facilities are needed to support agricultural and biomedical research as well as teaching and public engagement. The new and renovated facilities proposed at the SRC will consolidate most university swine operations at a single site, enabling the Imported Swine Research Laboratory (ISRL) to be vacated in the Research Park. The SRC will support research and teaching in ACES and across campus, thereby reinforcing collaborations with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Institute for Genomic Biology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Grainger College of Engineering, and Carle Illinois College of Medicine, as well as emerging interdisciplinary programs including the Center for Digital Agriculture and the Personalized Nutrition Initiative. A new SRC will: 1. Enable a consistent and readily available supply of pigs for biomedical and agricultural research across campus. 2. Improve agricultural housing systems to meet or exceed welfare standards as aligned with current and forthcoming legislation. 3. Provide housing for gene edited pigs used in agricultural and biomedical research with space that meets national and international standards for animal welfare. 4. Maintain a production herd with technology enabled facilities that can be a hub for precision animal management research and teaching. 5. Provide a surgical suite and multipurpose procedure rooms for training students in Animal Sciences and the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. 6. Allow hands on teaching activities that Animal Sciences has not been able to host since 2015 due to a lack of appropriate biosecurity capabilities. This project will relocate critical operations from ISRL to SRC. The critical operations to be relocated include space for a 300 sow breed to finish production herd facilities for housing gene edited pigs for agricultural and biomedical research and biomedical grade surgical facilities for research and teaching. When completed, ACES will vacate ISRL, thereby enabling further development in the UIUC Research Park. At SRC, this project will require renovation the office complex to introduce proper biosecurity measures addition of modular research pods designed to meet housing standards for gene edited and biomedical pigs addition of a technology enabled breed to finish swine production flow designed with flexibility to meet ever changing research needs and modification of the existing earthen lagoon to improve waste management practices and meet environmental sustainability goals. The modular biomedical facility will be scaled to meet current needs and sited to allow future expansion as necessary. The addition of a state of the art technology enabled swine production system will put Illinois at the forefront of precision animal management research. It leverages investments in the Feed Technology Center, Center for Digital Agriculture, and Discovery Partners Institute. The new construction and renovated infrastructure at SRC will be scaled to accommodate a sow herd of 300.
