GAOA Blodgett Road Bridge Replacement (Bridge 28 Construction) - Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

The existing timber beams, stringers, decking, railings, and wing walls will be demolished and removed from Midewin. The existing concrete abutments will remain in-place and supports for the replacement bridge will be installed outside of those abutments. The bridge will be replaced by a single-span timber, or steel bridge approximately 30 feet in length as described in the attached engineering documents. The replacement bridge will be supported on new horizontal concrete beams buried in and supported by the existing roadbed. The bridge shall have a clear roadway width of no less than 16 feet. The increase in length will allow the new concrete beams to be constructed outside of the existing stream channel, reducing sedimentation during this phase of construction. The old abutments will remain in place and riprap will be placed at their base to protect from additional scour. New timber wing walls will extend beyond the concrete abutments to prevent high water events from scouring behind the abutments and to support the road base. The replacement bridge will have timber curbs and crash rails that meet current roadway standards and railings that meet pedestrian trail standards.
