According to the museum website, Jarvisburg School was built in Powells Point, NC in 1867. The building was moved to its present site in the 1890s and expanded to its current size in 1911. During the 1950s school operations in the building ceased. From the 1960s through the 2010s the building was unoccupied and received little maintenance. Since a full restoration in 2014, the building has served as a museum. Since the 2014 restoration, the wood windows and siding have experienced significant rot and paint loss. The addition of a moisture barrier and air conditioning has caused condensation in the walls, resulting in the current condition of the woodwork. To correct the problem, the moisture barrier will be removed in areas where the siding is being removed. The cypress siding will need to be stripped to bare wood prior to priming, reinstallation, and painting. Rotted windows and siding will need to be repaired or replaced, depending on the degree of rot.. The scope of the project includes but is not limited to: structural jacking and stabilization, exterior siding and wood trim repair and replacement, interior wood paneling and trim repair and replacement, wood window repair and replacement, installation of interior storm windows, wood door repair, and gutter and downspout installation. |
